"...y eso cómo se come?"

"...y eso cómo se come?"
"...and how do you eat that?"

My grandmother was a migrant worker for most of her life.  I remember that she always saw positive in things and was probably the most resilient person I would ever know in my life.  Her needs were simple so it was easier to find joy in life even when you didn't have much.

I am reminded of conversations that I had with my grandmother where I had these grand stories to tell her about things I had learned in school that day.  She would listen so intently and at the end she would ask me, "...y eso cómo se come?", "...and how do you eat that?".

To her, everything went back to the practical...  How does that benefit me.  She didn't spend lots of time watching tv shows (she did have her soaps though after she retired).  Gourmet food or exotic ingredients were not her thing.  There was no practicality to these things and in the end it was always about the practical...  How do I eat that... or how do I make use of this.

This question always sat in my head for a day or two and always had this really interesting affect on me.  Today it is a test of anything i put significant time into.  I test it for practicality...  How can I use this is as leverage.  I test the books I want to read and that I am in the process of reading because I am not interested in killing time on a novel that will give me no beneficial insight.

I am by no means a scholar or a workaholic, but i want the effort i expend to mean something.  I want to gain some knowledge or experience something that makes me smarter, more empathetic, more efficient and to better refine my direction.

So,  my question to you...  How do you inform your decisions or direct the efforts you expend to improve your traction.  How do you weigh options?  I'm interested to know.
